It is easy by reading Malouf to enter into the imaginary – not fiction or fairytale, but imaginary in the sense that reality is comprised of thoughts, feelings and sensations dream stuff as much as practicalities.

Here are nine haunting stories from the award-winning author of Remembering Babylonin dabid history and geography, as well as the past and the present, combine and often collide, illuminating the landscape and revealing the character of Australia. The reader can see why David Malouf is acclaimed and award winning. And the family birthday celebrations of the long, final story, “Great Day”, left me cold; missing any real Australianisms, it could have been anywhere, and peopled by its inane characters, with their petty worries and blithe wanderings, it took me several days to finish, and I started to wonder why I liked this writer in the first place.

In the dream he knows he stayed with his dog until it died and only then took the hand which leads him deram to the upper world of sunshine. There are other stories however, where something does happen, and in that moment the natural world is disturbed, turned into something surreal, the reality turning into nightmare, as in Lone Pine, where a couple stops for a night on their first real trip, only to become the victims of a terrible and random crime. I would give Malouf’s work another try – it intrigued me that he has opera librettos included on his resume – but I’m not sure that I’d reread this one.
